Protein Synthesis Flashcards

What does RNA stand for?
Ribonucleic acid
What is RNA?
Single stranded copy of DNA.
4 nucleotide: A, C, G & U (Uracil).
Complementary base pairing is
U = A, C = G
What are the different types of RNA?
- messenger RNA (mRNA)
- ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
- transfer RNA (tRNA)
RNA structure
4 nucleotide: A, C, G & U (Uracil).
Complementary base pairing is
U = A, C = G
What are the two stages of protein synthesis and where do they occur?
Transcription: inside the
nucleus.
Translation: inside the
cytoplasm.
What is transcription?
The process of making a copy of DNA.
The steps of transcription
- The gene in the nucleus unwinds to expose the bases.
- Free mRNA nucleotides in the nucleus make a
complementary strand of the DNA. - The mRNA leaves the nucleus through a pore.
What is translation?
takes place on ribosomes in the cell cytoplasm, where mRNA is read and translated into the string of amino acid chains that make up the synthesised protein.
The steps of translation
- The mRNA attaches to a
ribosome in the cytoplasm. - The tRNA attaches its
anticodon to the matching
codon of the mRNA. - The tRNA releases its amino
acid and a peptide bonds form
between the other amino acids
to form a protein.
Name the terms for the 3 bases of DNA, mRNA and tRNA
Triplet, codon, anti-codon
Compare DNA and RNA
DNA is double stranded, found only in the nucleus, has thymine, deoxyribose sugar, double helix
RNA is single stranded, has uracil, found in and out of the nucleus, ribose sugar.
They both have adenine, guanine, and cytosine, phosphate group, types of nucleotypes, nucleic acid, protein synthesis.
