What is inheritance?
Inheritance is the passing of genes from parents to their
offspring (children).Genetic characteristics (qualities) are passed on at the
time of conception ½ ♂& ½♀
What is a genotype?
The genetic make-up of an individual is its genotype.
What is a phenotype?
The phenotype of an individual is the physical expression of the genotype within the environment.
What are alleles?
Different versions of
the same gene.
Homozygous
2 of the same
genes, e.g. bb or BB
Heterozygous
2 different
genes, e.g. Bb
Heterozygous individuals are
called carriers.
Complete dominance
A trait can be either
dominant or recessive.
Dominant trait
Dominant traits will always be expressed.
Always denoted with a capital letter B, Y
e.g. BB & Bb will both express brown eyes.
Recessive trait
Recessive traits will only be expressed if there are 2
(homozygous).
Always denoted with a lower-case letter
b, y
e.g. bb will express blue eyes
What are punnet squares used for?
Used to predict possible outcomes of a genetic cross.
Co-dominance
When two alleles are expressed at the same time they are co-dominant.
The ABO blood typing system are
examples of co-dominance.
Alleles are assigned with two different capital letters superscripted to one
common letter.
