protein synthesis Flashcards
- essential molecules
- perform a variety of functions in living organisms
proteins
process of DNA ▶️protein (protein from DNA)
protein synthesis
two main stages of protein synthesis:
- transcript
- translation
process of how information in DNA is converted into functional protein:
- specific genes within its DNA must first be transcribed into molecules of mRNA
- these transcripts must be translated into chains of amino acids, which later fold into fully functional proteins
double helix made of nucleotides
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
Each nucleotide consists of:
- a sugar
- a phosphate group
- a nitrogenous base
4 bases types:
adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G)
Base pairing rules:
A pairs with T
C pairs with G
each set of three bases codes for one amino acid (during translation)
codon
first step of protein synthesis
Transcription: From DNA ▶️RNA
RNA polymerase binds to DNA and separates the strands.
Transcription: From DNA ▶️RNA
double-stranded, forming a double helix
DNA
usually single-stranded
RNA
copies info from DNA through base-pairing mechanism.
mRNA
carries amino acids
tRNA
