Protein Synthesis Flashcards
What are the processes involved in transcription?
RNA polymerase will connect complementary RNA bases to the DNA, forming a single stranded mRNA. mRNA consists of a message made of RNA that has been based on the DNA. Then, the mRNA goes out of the nucleus and attaches to a ribosome.
Where does transcription occur?
the nucleus
What are codons?
3 consecutive nucleotides on mRNA that specify a specific amino acid
What is amino acid?
building block for protein
What is a start codon?
codon AUG (methionine)
What are the stop codons?
at the end of mRNA and signal that the protein making is finished
codon UGA, UAA, UAG
What are anticodons?
A sequence of three nucleotides complementary to a codon.
What are the processes involved in translation?
tRNA (carries amino acid which is a building block for protein), is going to bring in amino acids to make protein. mRNA is important because it directs which tRNAs come with what amino acids need to be transferred. tRNAs look for their complementary bases then transfer their amino acids. (Codons and anticodons)
