Meiosis Flashcards
What is the purpose of meiosis?
Producing sex cells
Interphase 1?
46 chromosomes are replicated
Prophase 1?
chromosomes line up with their homologous pairs. Then crossing over occurs, where genetic info is exchanged.
Metaphase 1?
pairs line up across the center of the cell
Anaphase 1?
paired homologous chromosomes separate from spindle fibers pulling them apart
Telophase 1?
nuclear membrane forms around cluster of chromosomes
Cytokinesis?
2 daughter cells
Prophase 2?
cell’s chromosomes become visible
Metaphase 2?
chromosomes line up in the center of each cell
Anaphase 2?
paired chromatids separate
Telophase 2?
Nuclear membrane forms
Cytokinesis 2?
4 haploid daughter cells?
Haploid?
Containing ONE set of chromosomes (n). Sex cells are haploid
Diploid?
Containing TWO sets of chromosomes (2n). Body cells are diploid.
At what stage in meiosis do cells become haploid?
Telophase 1
