Protein Flashcards
Codons read in what direction?
5’–>3’
What is the start codon? Codes for
AUG. Methionine.
What is an open reading frame?
Area between start and stop codon.
What does it mean that the genetic code is degenerate?
An amino acid can be specified by more than one codon.
What is silent mutation? Missense? Nonense?
Silent: no result in amino acid change.
Missense=change in amino acid.
nonsense=codon changes to stop codon.
Slice site mutation? Frame-shift?
Splice: alter the way introns are removed producing aberrant proteins.
Frame=nucleotide insertion or deletion throws the reading frame off.
What are the steps of protein synthesis?
Activation of amino acids
Initiation
Elongation
Termination
What activates the amino acids?
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase.
Ribosome is made up of what?
Protein, tRNA, small and large subunits.
What are the 3 ribosome binding sites?
- A= amino acid docking site
- P= Peptide bonding site
- E= exit site
