Protein Flashcards
Give sources of protein
Eggs, fish, meat, dairy , beans , peas , lentils, nuts, seeds, quorn
What is the function of protein
Growth , repair and maintenance of : body tissue, muscles and blood cells
Why is high protein diet important when exercising regularly ?
Protein is the main component of muscle, protein is needed to build muscle growth/ mass, protein in muscle enables movement, cannot exercise without muscle , protein is used for muscle repair
What happens if there is protein deficiency
- child growth stops or slows
- digestive upsets as enzymes are not produced
- liver fails to function normally
- muscles are weak, limbs are thin and tummy is soft and may look distended
Protein is broken down in the body by what ?
Amino acids
Has many amino acids make up proteins
20
Our body can make 12 of them, how many do we have to get from food ?
8
What are the special 8 amino acids called that we must get from food
Essential amino acids
Animal proteins contain how many of these essential amino acids ?
All 8
Animal proteins have a ….
High biological value
All vegetable proteins ( except soya ) have ….
At least one or more of the essential amino acids missing
These vegetable proteins have a ….
Low biological value
If several vegetable proteins are eaten together ….
They will “complement” each other
When the proteins complement each other….this means that ….
The body is provided with the protein it needs because the amino acid which is missing in one vegetable will be found in another
Why is soya special ?
It is the only vegetable which has a high biological value
