Protein Flashcards
What are the functions of Protein?
Protein acts an an enzyme catalyst, defense, regulator and transport
What chemical elements make up proteins?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulfur and Phosphorus
What is an Amino Acid?
Amino acids are monomers or building blocks of protein
What is an Indispensable amino acid?
Indispensable Amino acids are essential amino acids that must be obtained from protein filled foods
How many indispensable amino acids do adults need?
Adults need eight iaa’s
How many indispensable amino acids do children need?
Children need ten iaa’s
Why do children have a high requirement for protein?
Children have a high requirement for protein to support rapid growth
Why do pregnant women have a high requirement for protein?
Pregnant women have a high requirement for protein to cater for the baby
Why do adolescents have a high requirement for protein?
Adolescents have a high requirement for protein for their rapid spurt of growth
What is high biological value protein and in which foods are they mainly found?
Hbv/ complete proteins are proteins that contain all the iaa’s in sufficient quantity and they are found in meat, cheese, fish, milk and eggs
What is low biological value protein and in which foods are they mainly found?
Lbv/incomplete proteins are proteins that lack one or more of the iaa’s and they are found in wheat, rice, oats, peas and beans
Name two proteins found in milk
Lactalbumin and Lactoglobulin
Name two proteins found in meat
Elastin and Collagen
Name two proteins found in egg
Mucin and Ovalbumin
