specifically inhibits the cleavage of gag/pol peptides from the polyprotein. Pol contains reverse transcriptase, integrase and protease subunits. This renders the viral particles that bud from the cell incapable of replication. It interacts with the P450 oxidase system, specifically inhibits CYP3A4. Inhibition of P450 can increase side effects of protease inhibitors while inducers can encourage viral resistance and lower plasma levels of the drug.
