Prosthetic Guest Lecture Flashcards
The ____ ankle system gives the patient energy back in LR to increase their endurance
BiOM
What is the name of the prosthetic that is thought controlled?
bionic
What prosthetic foot is very affordable, is very flexible, can handle uneven terrain, and is used in 3rd world countries a lot?
Jaipur foot
Why are post-operative prosthesis or rigid dressing used? When are they applied?
Help speed recovery time, protect wound from trauma, reduce pain and swelling after amputation. Applied in operating room or within 1-2 days.
What is the difference between PTB, TSB, and hydrostatic prosthetic sockets?
PTB: patellar tendon bearing, so not all the pressure is on that point, increases shear force. TSB (total surface bearing): distributes weight even more so better. Hydrostatic: this is the best choice, it draws it outwards from the surface of the limb so you don’t have pressure at the bottom of the limb; Pascal’s law of fluids.
What is suction suspension?
air is expelled from the socket, pulling limb toward socket, held in place by force of negative air pressure. Has an expulsion valve.
What is the disadvantage of having a pin suspension (gel liner with distal pin attachment and distal lock base)?
“milking” or pistoning effect of pressures on the distal part of the limb in gait
What can lateral trunk bending be caused by?
painful stump, trying to offset the pain by shifting weight
What can abducted gait be caused by?
discomfort in the groin or habit
What can circumducted gait be caused by?
prosthesis too long, weak knee flexors, weak hip flexors
What can vaulting be caused by?
opposite side leg too long, fear of stubbing toe, habit forming, hydraulic unit wears out
What can heel whip be caused by?
pelvic rotation, faulty walking habits, not tensing up muscles
