What is the prostate?
a small gland in the male reproductive system. its main role is to produce fluid that protects and supports sperm. It makes about 50% of the fluid that is ejaculated from the penis at orgasm.
Where is the prostate?
it is about the size of a walnut and shaped like adoughnut. It sits underneath the bladder and surrounds the top part of the urethra (the tube that urine passes through from the bladder to the penis)
What is prostatis?
inflammation of the prostate gland, which makes the prostate sore and irritated. it is a result of bacterial or non-bacterial infection.
What are the symptoms of prostatitis?
- dysuria
- urgency
- frequency
- painful ejaculation
- lower back pain
- perineal pain
- chills, fever
- muscular pain
- general malaise
how common is prostatits?
can affect men at any age. 1 in 6 men will experience at one stage in their lives.
What can cause prostatitis?
- most cases are caused by a bacterial infection. STDs can increase the risk of developing prostatitis.
- bladder blockage (stones, tumours)
- unprotected intercourse
What are the different types of prostatitis?
- acute bacterial prostatitis
- chronic bacterial prostatitis
- chronic non-bacterial prostatitis (chronic pelvic pain syndrome)
- asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis
What is the management of acute prostatitis?
for mild to moderate infection - augmentin PO
for severe infection - gentamicin IV 4-6 mg + amoxy/ampicillin IV 2g
What is the presentation of chronic prostatitis?
normal gland on clinical examination, suspect in patients with recurrent lower urinary tract infections
what is the management of chronic prostatitis?
norfloxacin 400 mg PO
OR
ciprofloxacin 500mg PO
OR
trimethoprim 300mg PO
OR
doxycycline 100mg PO
