When semen cannot be collected and when neoplasia invading the prostatic urethra is suspected
What causes BPH?
Effect of DHT on prostatic parenchyma
What is the most common sign of BPH?
Dripping blood from the urethra, not associated with urination
Is urethral compression a consequence to BPH?
No
What does BPH predispose dogs to?
Bacterial prostatitis
How is BPH diagnosed?
Ultrasound
Often presumptive
What is the treatment of BPH?
Castration is curative
Finasteride can be considered
Asymptomatic dogs do not need treatment
When might prostatic abscesses occur?
After acute or chronic bacterial prostatitis
