Prostaglandins and oxytocis Flashcards
What do prostaglandins and oxytocis do
Induce abortion and induce labour. They can also minimise blood loss from placenta and induce contractions
Role of oxytocin
Induction of labour and for bleeding from miscarriage/abortion
Role of gemeprost
Prostaglandin given vaginally as pessaries - induces abortion and ripens cervix before abortion
Role of carboprost
Severe post partum haemorrhage
Role of ergomentine
Bleeding from miscarriage/abortion controlled by this
Role of misoprostol
Prostaglandin given by mouth/vagina but unlicensed - induction of labour
Role of mifepristone
Facilitates abortion - sensitises uterus to prostaglandins so shorter time and reduced dose of prostaglandin needed
Dinoprostone role
induction of labour
Oxytocin and ergomentine together use
More effective when given together rather than alone
How is mifepristone used
Single dose of mifepristone is followed by administration (gemeprost or misoprostal)
What is used in management of ectopic pregnancy?
Systemic methotrexate
