To replace the oestrogen levels because they naturally decrease as women get older
What can oestrogen cause
Thromboembolism
What are women with uterus given
Progesterone and oestrogen as this reduces endometrial cancer risk
Can increase risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and VTE
What can be given for hot flushes
Venlafaxine
Reasons to stop HRT
Chest pain
Breathlessness
Swelling
Stomach pain
Hepatitis, jaundice, liver enlargement
Prolonged mobility
What is the advice for long haul flights
Compression stockings and increased movement
How long to stop HRT before surgery
4-6 weeks for elective
Non elective - give LMWH or unfractionated heparin and compression stockings
What is early and natural menopause
Early - below 45
Natural - above 50

May reduce vasomotor symptoms
What cancers do HRT increase risk of?
Ovarian and breast cancer
When is risk of ovarian cancer reduced?
Reduced within a few years of stopping HRT
