Prosocial Behavior Flashcards
1
Q
5-steps bystander intervention model (Latane & Darley)
A
- notice event (hard to identify emergency situations, sensory overload)
- interpret event as emergency (pluralistic responsibility)
- decide for personal responsibility to help
- how to help? implement plan! (no knowing what to do might stop you; hard to think well in emergency situation)
- conscious decision to help
2
Q
empathy-altruism model
A
-> empathy is another oriented emotion in which we feel empathy, compassion and tenderness -> care for other person (more altruistic)
-> raises quality of help provided (more sympathetic, more targeted) -> ensuring that help actually helps
3
Q
negative state relief model
A
helping others boosts our mood -> being helpful makes one feel good (automatic for us) [as long as negative state is moderate]
-> just helping when there is no easier way to boost one’s mood (egoistic)
