decorations? why/why not ?
No decorated pediments, metopes or friezes - either economical reasons or to save the great adornment for the Parthenon
PROPYLAIA
symmetrical?
quazy symmetrical because of the two, differently sized, added on porches
PROPYLAIA
which order + why?
Predominately doric but also ionic held up the the outer porch - the mixture of the two was to prepare you for the parthenon which also mixed these two orders
PROPYLAIA
problems the architect faced in designing it
depleted funds as the parthenon was of higher importance –> extensions cancelled. War was inevitably looming. Southwest wing was amputated slightly to allow spca for the Athena Nike statue. Architects had to show respect for old shrines even if the aesthetic of the prop suffered.
