  • Caryatids: choice of one leg bent was purely aesthetic, not to do with support

possible reasons for use of the Caryatids

A
  • might have been considered public or state replacements for the private votives destroyed by the Persians in 480
  • Or even replacements for the Caryatids that once stood in Archaic buildings on the Acropolis.
  • show skill in sculpting
  • Sign of Athenian rebellion/defence

Caryatids significance of their location

A

They face the Parthenon, looking to the most prominent and important building on the Acropolis. Their profiles even slightly resemble the offering bearing maidens of the Parthenon’s east frieze.
