Who ordered it to be built + why?

A

Pericles (ruler of Athens)
- A political symbol to show both the wealth of Athens and the strength (military and political) of Athens. They wanted to show they were still strong after defeat in the Persian War
—> was actually rebuilt after the Peruvians destroyed it in 480

General subject matter + significance

A

Panathenaic procession heading towards east

Significant as it represented Athenian pride / sense of self as it was an indication of the the Athenian festival that celebrated Athena’s birthday
‘Panathenaia’ means All-Athenian
Emphasises the spirit of the city, their devotion to their patron goddess

POSEIDON seated looks at Apollo who looks back 
APOLLO + ARTEMIS -twins, seated
