Pericles (ruler of Athens)
- A political symbol to show both the wealth of Athens and the strength (military and political) of Athens. They wanted to show they were still strong after defeat in the Persian War
—> was actually rebuilt after the Peruvians destroyed it in 480

Panathenaic procession heading towards east
Significant as it represented Athenian pride / sense of self as it was an indication of the the Athenian festival that celebrated Athena’s birthday
‘Panathenaia’ means All-Athenian
Emphasises the spirit of the city, their devotion to their patron goddess

THE GODS (gods always on east side) (From left to right): HERMES - travellers hat DIONYSUS - asking for wine DEMETER ARES - Restless for war IRIS HERA - bridal ZEUS+HERA - sit on throne (Zeus - beard) ATHENA -talking to HEAPHESTUS POSEIDON seated looks at Apollo who looks back APOLLO + ARTEMIS -twins, seated EROS (mostly missing)

The birth of Athena from head of Zeus. The news travels outwards from Athena and Zeus who are in the centre.
