Proportions Flashcards
Proportion
The relationship between one part of an object or composition and other part to the whole, or between one element and another
Scale
The relationship to an object to a known size
Interior design is focused on human scale
Golden Section
Thee golden ratio originates from a series of numbers called the Fibonacci sequence. Beginning with 0 and 1, each number in the fibonacci sequence is derived by adding the two previous numbers in the sequence together
As the numbers in the sequence get larger, the ratio between them gets closer and closer to 1:1.618. That is the golden ratio
Classical Orders
First used in the Greek/Roman world
Proportioning their elements, representing the perfect expression of beauty
Studies by Vitruvius - Ten Books of Architecture
Vignola recodified these for the Italian Renaissance
Renaissance Theories
Architects returned to the Greek mathematical system of proportions - Pythegoras and Plato
Architects was mathematics translated into spacial units
Series of ratios manifested themselves in dimensions of spaces, sequences of spaces, and the plan overall
Modular - Le Corbusier
Base precedent - incorporated both mathematics and the proportions of the human body
Scales and figure related to the human figure
Amount of space a human body occupies in space
A system not merely about numbers with inherent harmony, but a system of measurement that could govern lengths, surfaces, and volumes and maintain a human scale everywhere
Ken
Later half of Japan's middle ages Originally interval between two columns Aesthetic module ordering structure, materials, and space of Japanese architecture Two methods - varied w/ the size of the tatami mat Tatami size: two persons sitting, one sleeping, and can be arranged in infinite ways
Anthropometry
Measurement of size and proportions of the human body
Ergonomics - applied science that coordinates the design of devices, systems, environments with the physiological and psychological capacities and requirements
