Colour Theory Flashcards
Colour | Light
Through refraction or the bending of light through the prism, Newton discovered that light was made of different wavelengths each associated with different colours
The visible spectrum ranges from about 400nm (nanometers) to 700nm
Colour | Additive Colour
Newton discovered that when all of the colours of light are added together, white light is created
When a beam of light is projected onto an object, the object will absorb some wavelength while reflecting others
Through this process we perceive the colour reflected
Colour | Subtractive Colour
When substances are blended the resulting colour becomes darker and eventually black
Subtractive colour mixing is important to a designer or artist, as material include dyes, paints, stance, and colorants and all of these use subtractive colour mixing
The colour wheel is based on subtractive colour
Colour | Hue
Hue: the name of the colour
Determined by wavelength
Organizing hues can happen in multiple ways
Colour | Value
Relative lightness and darkness of a colour
Basic variations in value: tint, shade, tone
Colour | Intensity
Purity of a colour: intensity, saturation, chroma
Most intense: primaries, secondaries, tertiaries
Addition of black
Addition of a complimentary colour
Colour Schemes | Monochromatic
One colour in various tints and shades
Colour Schemes | Analogues
Three colours side by side on the colour wheel
Colour Schemes | Complementary
Hues that are on opposite sides of the colour wheel
Psychology of Colour | Branding
We respond to colour physically, emotionally, and behaviourally
Our response is instinctual or innate, while in other case we respond based on our experiences or learning
Colour Symbolic | Blue In History
Colour associations vary greatly
Colour implications!
Meaning of blue
Space
The dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move
Form
The visible shape or configuration of something
You can make or fashion into a certain shape
Colour
The property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way the object reflects to emits light
Light
The natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible
