property dualism Flashcards
Property dualism
property dualism claims that there is only one substance in the world - physical. but, mental states are non-physical properties on the physical brain. property dualism believes that these mental states are non-reducible, non identical, and do not supervene on physical properties.
the zombie argument - Chalmers
1) zombies are conceivable
2) if zombies are conceivable then they are metaphysically possible
3) zombies are metaphysically possible
4) if zombies are metaphysically possible then phenomenal properties of consciousness are neither physical properties nor supervene on them
5) therefore phenomenal properties of consciousness are neither physical properties nor supervene on them
6) physicalism is false and property dualism is true
Zombies are inconceivable
it is impossible for us to imagine our won zombie replica
whenever we imagine ourselves in any given circumstance, we are picturing this in the first person (e.g, sky diving)
this means we cannot conceive of our zombie replica because we are picturing something with qualia - therefore compromising the idea of one
Mary argument
1) Mary knows all physical facts about color perception
2) upon seeing a red rose she learns something new
3) therefore not all facts are physical facts
4) therefore not all phenomenal properties of the mind are physical and physicalism is false
Mary gains ability knowledge, not propositional knowledge
Mary gains know how knowledge
the ability that marry gains is imagination, recognition, and memory
as ability knowledge isn’t about learning any new fact, physicalism is unthreatened
Mary gains acquaintance knowledge, not propositional knowledge
one can be acquainted with something while not knowing any truths about it, its about being conscious of it
a baby can be aquatinted with fire and think that the fire is painful. but the baby does not have any propositional knowledge that fire is painful
Mary knows all physical facts about colour but is not aquatinted with the experience of seeing red
when she sees it she becomes aquatinted with the experience which is not propositional knowledge
new knowledge old facts
this response claims that Mary still does have all physical facts about color perception but through her experience she learns a new way to think about it
frege sense and reference: learning that batman is bruce Wayne is learning that bruce Wayne is bruce Wayne. its the same facts but a different view
Mary gains a new sense of the same reference
