Mind-brain type identity theory Flashcards
mind-brain type identity theory
the mind brain type identity theory ontologically reduces the mind to the brain stating that every mind process such as feelings, moods, and sensations are just a brain process. the mind and brain are therefore identical
issues with providing the type identities (the multiple realisability of mental states)
Putnam argues that mental properties are not the same as physical properties this is because the same mental state seems to be realised differently in different species. for instance with pain, the physical reaction from a human is distinctly different to one for a bird
if the same mental state is realised differently in different things then mental states cannot be reduced to physical states .
if pain is N. and N2 is pain in humans and N3 is pain in birds, N2 cannot equal N3
