Properties Of Waves Video 3 Flashcards
Travelling waves+ exist as what (3)
unconstrained waves that are free to move
when a wave is not confined to a given space along the medium
May exist as packets of varying size
Describing travelling wave (2)
- Wavelength (wavelength of a single oscillation)
- Dimensionality (oscillation happens how many dimensions **can be 1,2,3 dimensional wave)
There is no ____on____ and ____ of a travelling wave because we haven’t restricted it from doing anything
limitations
wavelength
dimensionality
Standing wave (2)
Waves with constraints, has to follow certain rules to exist
A pattern is readily observable.
Why does standing wave only occur at certain frequencies and what determines this? (3)
Determined by the wavelength
-Because the string length isn’t able to produce as much frequencies
The ‘permissible’ wavelengths are exact INTEGER fractions of the fundamental wavelength. Other wavelengths cannot exist. Correspondingly, the string can generate only those frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency, viz. 2f, 3f, 4f….etc; no other - all because the ends of the wire are fixed, and the standing wave has to have complete half-cycles. You cannot have a part of a half cycle. These frequencies are known as the harmonics of the fundamental frequency.
Nodes+nodes on electron wave packet
Places where the wave amplitudes is always zero
- Nodes on electron= places where the electron will never be
more nodes in a standing wave=
more energy to create/sustain it
Quantization+ ex
Only certain solutions are possible (wavelength limits it)
A piano string of certain length can only create certain tones
Wave packets (2)
The case where 2 or more waves exist simultaneously
The sum of two waves with diff frequencies
