Properties of Water Flashcards
Properties of water (7)
polarity, cohesion, adhesion, capillary action, temperature control, high heat vaporization, density, solvent
Polarity
polar covalent bonds; unequal sharing of electrons between oxygen and hydrogen
Cohesion
Attraction of molecules for other molecules of the same kind (H20 to H20)
Adhesion
Attraction to other molecules that are also polar (H20 to other); caused by polarity of H20
Capillary Action
the upward movement of water due to the forces of cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension
Temperature Control
Water resists changes in heat bc of hydrogen bonds
Importance of high specific heat of water
regulates ocean temperature, moderates air temperature, organisms can resist changes in their internal temperature
High Heat Vaporization
water requires a large amount of energy to evaporate due to strong hydrogen bonds
Density (floating ice)
as water solidifies it expands and becomes less dense; due to hydrogen bonds - bonds break when cooled
Solvent
dissolving agent in a solution; water in universal solvent
