Properties Of Water Flashcards
What happens as water molecules move around?
They make and break hydrogen bonds
What foes the “liquid at room temperature” property of water do?
Provides habitats for living things
Forms major component of tissue
Provides reaction medium for chemical reactions
And provides a transport medium(blood)
What causes water to be liquid?
The hydrogen bonds between the molecules of water make it hard for the water to escape as a gas.
What makes waters density different from other liquids?
As it gets colder it gets more dense untill 4degrees c
Why is water more dense than ice?
Because of its polar nature ice molecules align themselves in a way that makes them less dense
Because ice is less dense than water:
Aquatic animals have a stable environment live in
Bodies of water are insulated against cold by a layer of ice
Why is water a good solvent?
Because it is polar the positive parts of it are attracted yo negative ions and vise versa which pulls apart the charged ions/molecules
Because water is a good solvent:
Molecules and ions cam react in water e.g. cytoplasm
Molecules and ions can be transported in water (dissolved)
Cohesion
The hydrogen bonds pulling water molecules together
Surface tension
Molecules at the top are attracted to molecules beneath them as there are none above them.
Because of cohesion and surface tension
Water is pulled up through xylem
Some insects can walk on water(pond skaters
High specific heat capacity means:
Living things need suitable temperature for enzyme reactions
Aquatic animals need stable environment
High SLH means:
Water can be used to cool down living things e.g. sweating and water evaporating from mesophyll
What is waters reactive properties useful for?
Digestion and synthesis of large biological molecules
