Molecular Bonding Flashcards
Condensation reaction
When two molecule join and water is removed
Hydrogen bond
Weak interaction that occurs wherever molecule have a slightly negative charge bonded with a slightly positive charge
Hydraulisis reaction
When a molecule is split with the addition of water
Monomer
A small molecule that binds to identical molecules
Polymer
Large molecule made up of monomers
What are the most important bonds in organic molecules
C-C
C-H
Types of molecules in carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids
Carbohydrates- C,H,O
Proteins- C,H,O,N and S
Nucleic acids- C,H,O,N and P
Monomers and polymers of carbs
Monosaccharides to polysaccharides
Monomers and polymers of proteins
Amino acids to polypeptides/proteins
Monomers and polymers of nucleic acids
Nucleotides to RNA/DNA
Why is water polar?
Because the oxygen atoms nucleus is more positive than the hydrogen nucleus giving it a higher affinity for electrons and a negative charge leaving hydrogen with a positive charge.
