Properties Of Metals Flashcards
Uses and properties of aluminium.
Low density
Doesn’t corrode because it has a layer of aluminium oxide that forms quickly on its surface.
Used with other metals to make aeroplanes.
Lighter and aeroplane, the less fuel is needed.
Cars as well
Uses and properties of copper
Extremely good electrical conductor
Used for electrical cables
Low reactivity- doesn’t react with water
Used for water pipes
Slowly reacts with water - could cause lead poisoning.
Uses and properties of gold.
Very unreactive and does not corrode
Also very reactive
Main use is jewellery, work easily into beautiful shapes and stays shiny because it doesn’t tarnish from corrosion
Best electrical conductor
Used inside most electronic devices, printed circuit boards, connection strips and contacts in switches.
Only a tiny amount is needed
Uses and properties for iron and steel
Iron- fairly cheap to extract, pure iron is too soft to be very useful, so is made into steel
Steel- stronger and harder, used; bridges, cars, electrical goods, machinery, frames for buildings.. Also magnetic.
Both can rust easily.
Properties of metals
Shiny when polished
Conduct heat and electricity
They’re malleable (can be hammered into shape)
They’re ductile (can be stretched into wires)
