Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What happens to atoms during chemical reactions?
During chemical reactions, atoms are neither created nor destroyed.
During chemical reactions, atoms are rearranged to make new products with different properties from the reactants.
What happens to the mass in a reaction?
The total mass before and after a reaction in a sealed container is unchanged, as shown by practically by a precipitation. Easiest to demonstrate where none of the reactants or products are allowed to leave the system- stoppered test tube.
What are precipitation reactions?
Precipitation reactions happen when soluble substances react together to form an insoluble product, called the precipitate.
Example: silver nitrate and potassium bromide are soluble. Their solutions react together to form insoluble cream- coloured silver bromide.
Define soluble
Substance which dissolves in a given solvent.
Define insoluble
Substance which does not dissolve in given solvent
Define precipitate
Insoluble product formed in a precipitation reaction
What are atoms?
Atoms are the smallest particles of an element that can take part in chemical reactions.
