PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS Flashcards
Soluble-
It dissolves in a certain liquid.
Insoluble-
It cannot be dissolved in a certain liquid.
Concetration-
An amount of something in a certain volume.
Saturated solution-
when no more solute can be dissolved.
Conservation of mass-
mass of solvent+mass of solute= mass of solution.
Solubility-
Measure of how soluble something is.
What do all solutions have in common?
They are transparent not colourless.
Solute-
A solid substance which dissolves into a solvent.
Solvent-
The liquid in which a solute dissolves into to produce a solution.
Solution-
The substance which is produced when the solute dissolves into the solvent.
Factors affecting solubility-
- Tempreture.
-If the solution is saturated the excess will collect at the bottom.
Pure substance-
A substance which is made from only one atom or compound.
Impure Substance-
A substance which contains impurities and other substances.
Uses of chromatography-
- To check the purity of medicine.
- To detect contaminants in food and drink.
- To inspet cosmetics.
The distance moved by the spot depends on-
- Attraction to the paper.
- The more attracted the spot
is to the paper the slower
and less it moves.
- The more attracted the spot
- Attraction to solvent.
- The more attracted the spot
is to the solvent the faster it
moves.
