GAS EXCHANGE AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION Flashcards
What are the 7 parts of the Respiratory System?
- Nose
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- Trachea
- Brochus
- Bronchioles
- Alvioli
Adaptations of the lungs:
- Large surface area: millions of alveoli.
- Short diffusion pathway: Thin wall of alveolus and capillary.
- High concentration difference: Good blood supply and efficient ventilation.
What is Respiration?
A chemical process which takes place in the mitochondria. Its the breakdown of glucose to release energy.
What is Breathing/Ventilation?
A phisical process which takes place in the lungs. Its the movement of air in and out.
What is Gas exchange?
A physical process which takes place between the air and the blood.
Explain the differences between inspired and expired air.
Expired air contains more carbon dioxide, it contains less oxygen, and it contains more water vapor than inspired air
What is the test for CO₂?
Blow oxygen intoa test tube filled with Limewater. If it turns cloundy then that means that it contains Carbon Dioxide.
What happens when you inhale?
- Ribcage moves up and out.
- The diaphram muscles contract.
- Volume of the chest cavity increases.
What happens when you exhale?
-Ribcage moves downwards and in.
-The diaphram muscles relax.
- Volume of the chest cavity decreases.
The effects of physical activity on the rate and depth of breathing:
the breathing rate and volume of each breath increases.
State the word equation for aerobic respiration:
Glucose+Oxygen - Carbon Dioxide+Water
State the balanced symbol equation for aerobic respiration:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 - 6CO2 + 6H2O
Parts of the blood:
- Platelets.
- Red blood cells.
-White blood cells. - Plasma.
What do Platelets do?
Platelets are involved in blood clotting.
What do Red Blood cells do?
Transport CO2 and heat.
