properties of material Flashcards
what is elastic behaviour ?
when a sample has been deformed by a force and returns to its original shape when the force causing deformation is removed
what is plastic behaviour?
it’s the opposite of elastic behaviour, material doesn’t go back to its original shape
what’s the elastic limit?
the limit up to which a material can be stretched and still return to its original shape
what does ductile mean?
can be easily and permanently stretched and drawn out into wires
what does brittle mean?
cannot be permanently stretched, breaks after the elastic limit, strong under compression, weak under tension e.g. concrete, brick, stone
what does fracture mean?
the point where material breaks due to the force applied
what’s the yield point?
whereby the material changes shape
what’s creep?
when stress on a material cause it to deform over time e.g temp, stress
what is fatigue ?
progressive and localised structural damage that occurred when a material is subjected to cycle bonding
state one change to the structure at yield point
it becomes permanently deformed
when a steel bar has strength, it resists …
DEFORMATION
which property of steel allows it to be pressed into different shapes ?
malleability
