Properties of Life Flashcards
what is life
organisms (living things)
what are the 4 componements for the organization of life
molecules, cell, tissue, organ
what is a molecule
chemical components of cells, made up of atoms linked by strong bonds
what is a cell
smallest unit of life, cells can be broken down into organelles
what is tissue
a group of similar cells that perform the same function
what is an organ
a structure with two or more tissues working together to perform a function
what is a population
all individuals of the same species in an area
what is a community
all the species in an ecosystem that can interact
what is an ecosystem
a community and its physical environment
what is the biosphere
the part of earth that support all life
what are the 7 properties of life
- cells and organization (one or more cells with ordered structures)
- energy use and metabolism (chemical energy from food or light power the organism)
- response to environmental changes (react to internal or external environment like odour, light and temp.)
- regulation and homeostasis (maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting physiological processes)
- growth and development (changes: specialized cells, increase size increase cells)
- reproduction (asexual or sexual)
- biological evolution (population having adaptive traits that ensure survival and reproduction in their env.)
what does every cell consist of
-surrounded by a membrane
-contain genetic information (DNA)
-internal mass (cytoplasm)
-have ribosomes (protein synthesis)
what is cell theory
-a cell is the smallest unit of life
-cells make up all living things
-new cells arise from preexisting cells
what are single cell organisms
bacteria, archaea, protists (some)
what are multicellular organisms
plants, fungi, animals, protists (some)
what is determinate growth
growth stops, genetically pre-determined
what is indeterminate growth
growth that is never terminated
