Q

Arbitrariness

A

No inherant connection between linguistic form and its meaning. A piano doesn’t look like the word piano.
2 exceptions. onomatapoeia: the word looks how it sounds. Sound symbolism: i in words like tiny, ity, bity all suggest that it is small.
