Properties of Gases Flashcards
What is boyles law?
Pressure of gas is inversely proportional to its volume
What is partial pressure?
Pressure that would be exerted by 1 of the gases in a mixture if it occupied the same vol on its own
What is atmospheric pressure?
Pressure exerted by the weight of the air above the earth in the atmosphere
What happens when inspired gases come in contact with body fluids?
Gas molecules will enter water – dissolve
Water molecules will enter air – evaporate
Outline evaporation
Molecules entering the air exert = vapour pressure
Air is saturated with water vapour = when water leave/enter at same rate
Vapour pressure = 6.28kPa
The air that we breath in becomes saturated where?
Upper resp tract
At what point is the partial pressure of plasma = alveolar air?
When Hb is fully saturated, O2 continues to dissolve until equilibrium is reached
How does oxygen move from the Hb to the tissue?
First moves to dissolved state in plasma
Then diffuses down partial pressure gradient to the tissue
How can oxygen travel in the blood?
Either bound to Hb
Travels freely as O2
Why does the pO2 levels very between atmospheric air and alveolar air?
O2 is constantly leaving into the alveolar capillaries
What is decompression sickness in divers?
Atmospheric pressure is high the deeper you dive
Nitrogen moves from high pressure in the lungs into the low pressure blood
Swimming to the surface too quickly = doesn’t give N enough time to leave the blood
Forms painful bubbles
