properties of gases Flashcards
gas
is a substance that has no well-defined boundaries but diffuses rapidly to fill any container in which it’s placed
temperature can be converted from Celsius
to kelvin by adding 273
normal atmospheric pressure/standard pressure
1x10 ⁵ Pa = 100kPa
Boyles law
at a constant temperature, the volume of a fixed mass is inversely proportional to its pressure (PV=k)
Charles law
at constant pressure, the volume of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to its temperature measured on the Kelvin scale
gay lussacs law of combining volume
in a reaction between gases, the volumes o the reacting gases and the volumes of any gaseous products are in the ratio of small whole numbers provided the volumes are measured at the same temperature and pressure
avogadros law
equal volumes of gases contain equal numbers of molecules under the same conditions of temperature and pressure
ideal gases
gases that obey all gas laws under alll conditions of temperature and pressure
real gases
they do not follow gas laws due to forces of attraction or repulsion between molecules and the volume if the molecules is not negligible
