Two great rivers run through China Proper: Yellow River in the north and Yangtze(Yangzi) River in the south. Most of China Proper belongs to the drainage-basins of these two rivers.

Northern Proper China was on a muddy plain along the Yellow River. The land was mostly flat. The soil is replenished by the build-up carried down by the Yellow River.

The staple crops that grew in Proper China were wheat, corn, sorghum, millet, and soybeans. Recently, rice has become more widely grown.Tea is also widely grown in Southern proper China.
