The Chinese government encouraged people to have larger families.
What happened after the Chinese government encouraged its people to have larger families?
There was an overpopulation and the government couldn’t keep up with the amount of people. Then, they said that city-dwellers could only have one child but country-side dwellers could have more. However, most only had two or three.
Were men more important than women in Ancient China?
Yes, many people believed that men were more important than women.
What gender baby did most fathers want?
Most fathers wanted a male to carry the family name and do the labor work with the father. Fathers had the right to kill the female or send her to an adoption center.
Did women get to pick their groom?
No, women had no right choosing their husbands. Fathers of the bride also had to give away a large dowry to the husband’s family.
Could women remarry?
No, women could not remarry and were given a death sentence if they even dared to.
What was the prime duty of women?
The prime duty was to bear male hears and take care of the domestic (home) household.
Were women allowed to go to school?
Women were not allowed to go to school and some studied from their brothers. However, some women developed a secret language called ‘‘Nushu’’ which only women could understand.
When did large changes occur in the role of women?
In the Han, Tang, and Song dynasties, many things changed. Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty brought large changes in the plight of women.
What shoes did men wear?
Men wore leather shoes on formal occasions and silk or leather ones on special occasions. Many men who couldn’t afford silk and leather shoes wore cotton shoes.
What happened to women’s feet?
They were subjected to an inhuman practice of binding their feet to make it appear smaller. They would wrap the feet in silk, and the toes were disjointed and they were called Lotus Feet. Having small feet was a must for elite girls. Apparently, men thought that this was attractive. #weirdos
What did foot binding help women with?
Binding their feet helped women get married to a rich husband. Later on, countryside people also started following this fashion.

The binding of the feet often caused the feet to be disfigured and often resulted in bacterial infections.
