Propeller Flashcards
The amount of lift produced by a propeller blade is dependant on what 2 factors
- Speed
- AoA
If a propeller blade had the same AoA across its entire length, which section of the propeller would produce more lift?
THE TIP
The tip has greater distance to travel
It travels faster so would produce more lift with the same AoA as the centre of the blade
At the hub of a propeller blade, AoA is MORE or LESS than the AoA at the tip
Hub = MORE
Tip = LESS
The AoA of a propeller blade is dependent on which 2 factors
- Propeller Pitch (Blade angle)
- Forward Velocity
Fixed Pitch Propeller
In a climb, the effective AoA is INCREASED or DECREASED?
What effect does this have on RPM?
Why?
INCREASED AoA
DECREASED RPM
Engine has to work harder
Fixed Pitch Propeller
In a descent, the effective AoA is INCREASED or DECREASED?
What effect does this have on RPM?
Why?
DECREASED AoA
INCREASED RPM
Engine has to work less
You can determine how far a propeller moves forward in one revolution based on what?
GEOMETRIC PITCH
Forward movement produced by a propeller can be reduced as a result of what?
Why?
SLIP
Air is “difficult to get hold of”, reducing the effective forward movement
What is Asymmetric Blade Effect known as
P FACTOR
When is P Factor most likely to occur and why
CLIMB or DESCENT
Nose is not straight on to the airflow
In a nose high pitch, the DOWN or UP going blade has a greater effective AoA
DOWN GOING
With a clocksie rotation propeller viewed from the cockpit, which direction does the aircraft Yaw
LEFT
Counteract with Right Rudder
Right Rudder creates more lift on the rudder to the left, which yaws the nose back to the right
What force/reaction is produced by a rotating propeller
TORQUE
From the cockpit, if the propeller is rotating clockwise, what direction will the airframe try to rotate
ANTI CLOCKWISE
What is the cause of an aircraft yawing to the left with a clockwise propellr (viewed from the cockpit)
SLIPSTREAM
Airflow corkscrews around the aircraft, hitting the fin on the left side, creating a weathercocking effect
