Propanolol (Inderal) Flashcards
Class
Beta adrenergic antagonist, antianginal, antihypertensive, antiarrhytmic class II
Action
Nonselectiv beta antagonist that binds with both the beta1 and beta2 receptors. Inhibits the strength of the heart’s contractions, as well as heart rate. This results in a decrease in a cardiac oxygen consumption
Indications
Angina; narrow-complex tachycardias that orginate from either a reentry mechanism (reentry SVT) or an automatic focus (junctional, ectopic, or multifocal tachycardia) uncontrolled by vagal maneuvers and adenosine in patients with preserved ventricular function; AF and atrial flutter in patients with preserved ventricular function; hypertension; migrane headaches
Adverse Effects
Bradychardia, AV block, bronchospasm, hypotension
Containdications
Cardiogenic shock, heart failure, AV block, bradycardia, pulmonary edema, sick sinus syndrome, known sensitivity. Use with caution in chronic lung diseases (asthma and COPD)
Dosage (Adult)
1 to 3 mg IV, IO at a rate of 1 mg/min; may repeat the dose 2 minutes late
Dosage (Peds)
.01 to .1 mg/kg slow IV, IO over a 10 min period
Special Considerations
Monitor blood pressure and heart rate closely during administration. Pregnacy class C
