What do pronouns do
Replace nouns where the noun has already been started to stop repetition
Subject pronouns
I, you, he , she , it , we, you ,they
Object pronoun
Me, you, him, her, it, us , you , them
Possessive adjectives
My, your, his, her, its, our,your ,their
Possessive pronoun
Mine , yours, his, hers, (third person not used) ours , yours ,theirs
Reflexive pronouns
Myself,yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves
Demonstrative pronouns
This, that, these, those
Indefinite pronouns
Someone, anything , everything
Relative +interrogative pronouns
Who, whose, whom, that, which
What is a verb
An action that somebody or something is doing
Dynamic verb
Indicate a physical action that is performed by the subject (eg. I jumped)
Stative verb
Indicates a mental action (eg. I remembered)
What kind of verb is “To Be”
Stative (is , am , are, was, were)
Main verbs
Express specific meaning/action (the monkey jumped)
Auxiliary verbs
Used with main verbs to create tenses (the monkey was jumping)(was jumping=1verb)
What are modal auxiliary verbs
Express meanings such as obligation, certainty and ability
What are the 10 modal verbs
Can,could,will,should,shall,would,may,might,must,ought
Process to recognise a verb phrase
- find a verb
- does it have a verb before or after it. YES
- Group them together
Simple tense
Shows actions or states of being at a point in time
Continuous tense
Shows an action that is/was in progress
-more than one verb
Perfect tense
Indicates a completed action

Present (simple) tense
-Happens on a regular basis
- one verb
-eg. I watch tv every day
Present continuous tense
-happening now
- aux verb + main verb
-eg. It’s raining
Past (simple) tense
-action that is finished
- one verb
- can be regular (add “ed”) or irregular
-eg. Swam , jumped
Past continuous tense
-continuing action or state happening at a point in the past
- aux verb + main verb
-to be in the past tense and a present participle (with ending ing)
-eg. We were trying to stop
Present perfect tense
- action or state occurred at indefinite time in past
-aux +main
-eg. We have talked before - have/has + past participle
Infinitive verbs
Verbs that don’t have any tense ( eg. To see)
Future tense
-refers to an action that will happen in the future
-will/shall + main verb
Past perfect
-(had+past participle)
-to talk about a certain point in the past
- eg. she had published her first Poem by 8
Passive verbs
Focuses on the object rather than the subject eg the innocent people were killed by soldiers , instead of the soldiers killed innocent people
-to check a passive verb , add ‘by somebody’
What are adverbs
-How/when/where is something done
-single words
-manner , time , frequency , place
