-indicate how one thing relates to another
-position, direction , time
-usually followed by a noun

Consist of a preposition (always at the start) followed by a noun or a noun phrase

Join elements that are grammatically the same
Eg. And , but , or , for , nor , so , yet
Subordinating conjunctions
Introduce dependent or conditional clauses
Eg. Although she has money , she buys few luxuries
Because he was late , he missed the bus
Determiners
Precede nouns and refer directly to them
Definite article “the”
Indefinite article “a” or “an”

Adverbials
Phrases that express time , manner and place
Representation
The ability of any text to draw upon features of the world and present them to the reader
Ideologies
Shared set of beliefs or values
Dominant or hegemonic ideology
Dominant-hegemonic reading
The reader fully accepts the text in the way the producer intended
Share the same cultural background and world view
Negotiated position
The reader acknowledges the dominant hegemonic reading but decodes the text differently than the producer intended
Oppositional position
The reader understands the intended meaning, but ultimately rejects it
