Prolactinoma Flashcards
What is prolactinoma?
A prolactinoma is an adenoma (benign tumour) of the pituitary gland. (OHCM)
Describe the pathophysiology of hyperprolactinaemia.
The tumour pushes on surrounding tissues including the pituitary, causing it to produce excess prolactin. It is a non-functioning tumour. Microprolactinomas (<10mm on MRI) are much more common and often asymptomatic. Macroprolactinomas (>10mm) can grow to any size.
(OHCM)
