prokaryotic cells and viruses Flashcards
how are prokaryotic cells different to eukaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells are much smaller than eukaryotic cells. They also differ from eukaryotic cells in having:
.no membrane-bound organelles
.smaller ribosomes70s
.circular DNA no nuclease
.a murein cell wall
what else do SOME prokaryotic cells have?
.one or more plasmids
.a capsule surrounding the cell
.one or more flagella
describe viruses
.Viruses are acellular and non-living.
they have:
. a core containing genetic material
. a protein coat called capsid
. attachment protein
how do prokaryotic cells replicate
binary fission
describe binary fission
.DNA Loop replicates
.DNA loops move to opposite poles
.cytoplasm divides
.two daughter cells produced with one DNA loop and variable number of plasmid
how do viruses replicate?
- they use attachment proteins to bind to complementary receptor proteins on the surface of host cells
- since receptors need to be complementary, viruses can only infect one type of cell
- they do not undergo division, they are dead., they inject their DNA or RNA into host cells and replicate the viral particles
