Prokaryotic Cell Reproduction Flashcards
1
Q
cell cycle
A
the life of a cell from the time it is produced to the time it divides into two daughter cells
2
Q
requirements of cell division
A
DNA replication
DNA split evenly into the two new cells
Division of cytoplasm
3
Q
reasons for asexual division
A
reproduction (unicellular organisms)
growth and development (multicellular organisms)
tissue repair (multicellular organisms)
4
Q
process of binary fission
A
- DNA replicated
- copied origins of replication anchored to opposite poles of the PM (via an actin-like cytoskeleton protein)
- cell doubles in size, elongation causing the chromosomes to separate
- via tubulin-like cytoskeleton protein, PM pinches inward and new cell wall is built
- result is two identical cells
5
Q
finite media
A
environment with limited nutrient sources
6
Q
binary fission
A
form of asexual reproduction where cells divide in half
-method of reproduction for most prokaryotes
