Prokaryotic Binary Fission Flashcards
1
Q
Why do bacteria do prokaryotic binary fission instead of mitosis?
A
Because bacteria don’t have a nucleus.
2
Q
What does binary fission in prokaryotic cells involve?
A
- Replication of circular DNA and of plasmids.
- Division of the cytoplasm to produce two daughter cells, each with a single copy of the circular DNA and a variable number of copies of plasmids.
3
Q
Replication of viruses.
A
Being non-living, viruses do not undergo cell division. Following injection of the nucleic acid, the infected host cell replicates the virus particles.
