Prokaryotes Flashcards
What is a cell wall in a prokaryote made from and what is its purpose
Made from peptidoglycan(murein)
The cell wall prevents cell from bursting if it takes on to much water via osmosis
What is a plant cell wall made from
Cellulose
What is a fungi cell wall made from
Chitin
What is the nucleoid
The region within the cytoplasm of a prokaryotic cell where dna is found
What are the features of circular dna
Float free in the cytoplasm
Not associated with histones
Does not contain introns ( non coding sections of dna )
Where are the plasmids in a cell
They are floating free in the cytoplasm
What can plasmids do
Code for properties such as antibiotic resistance
Can be transferred from one prokaryote to another
What is a flagellum and what is its purpose
Is a long projection
A hair like structure that rotates to propel the prokaryote facilitating directional movement so they can find food
What is the purpose of a slime capsule and what are its properties
An extra layer on top of the cell wall, it prevents the cell from drying out
Makes the cells slippery eg bacteria can’t be engulfed by white blood cells
What happens in the ribosomes
mRNA is translated into proteins
What is the difference between ribosomes in eukaryotes and prokaryotes
P=70s ribosomes
E=80s ribosomes
