What are the 4 main types of progressives?
Social welfare, Democracy, Regulation of Business, and Efficiency.
What is progressive Social Welfare?
The improvement of living conditions and the common goods.
What is progressive Democracy?
It gives voters more control and political equality.
What is progressive Regulation of Business?
Improve the lives of workers, Know what trust is, Labor disputes(coal strike, Roosevelt sides with the workers on the strike).
What is progressive Efficiency?
Makes the government and businesses more efficient, Scientific principals, expertise, technology, Managing time and breaking tasks down into small parts.
Who are the key people to know from the Progressive Era?
Robert La Follette, Immigrants, Booker T. Washington, Muckrakers.
What did Robert La Follette do in the Progressive Era?
He was a Reform Governor for Wisconsin and Roosevelt called Wisconsin the Laboratory of Democracy because of him.
What did Immigrants do in the Progressive Era?
They were most from Eastern and Southern Europe. Unions didn’t like Immigrants coming here because they would take their jobs for a lower pay.
What did Booker T. Washington did in the Progressive Era?
He tried to help with segregation. He told people to deal with it and don’t fight it. HE wanted to help people of color obtain an education and get a job. These both fall under the idea of gradualism.
What is gradualism?
Slowly giving people of color rights.
Who were Muckrakers and what did they do?
They were investigative journalists. They would uncover corruption in politics and social conditions.
Name two Muckrakers.
Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens.
What did Upton Sinclair do to expose the corruption?
He wrote The Jungle which exposed the meat packing industry and all the wrongs they were doing.
What did Lincoln Steffen do to expose the corruption?
He wrote “The Shame of Cities” and exposed the corruption of the local government.
How does Teddy Roosevelt fight for “Big Business”, trusts, and monopolies?
He stands up to “Big Business” and brings more competition into business. He also supports the workers during the Coal Strike of 1902.
How did Roosevelt help to regulate monopolies and regulate businesses?
He no longer creates trusts, monopolies, etc. because the government had rules/laws against them. He also becomes a Trust Buster.
Why did the government create Federal income tax?
To make money and lower tariffs.
Why did the government need to make Federal income tax?
To get money from individuals/businesses.
What are political machines and how did they help immigrants? What did they want in exchange?
They corrupt individuals who ran cities. They would help immigrants get jobs. homes, food, etc. In exchange they wanted votes for political bosses.
