Why are Americans so hesitant to get involved in Imperialism?
America is a new country and remembers what it was like being ruled by another country.
What are the reasons for America wanting to go into Imperialism?
American Expansion, Going to war with Spain(Spanish-America war), Yellow Journalism, and U.S intentions for Cuba.
What did American Expansion have to do with America going for Imperialism?
Economics (trade, resource, new markets), Political, Military, Social Cultural( They needed/wanted people to act like regular American people)
What did the Spanish-American War have to do with America going for Imperialism?
USS Maine blew up and the U.S blames Spain even though they didn’t.
What did Yellow Journalism have to do with America going for Imperialism?
It was the original fake news and it was based on exaggeration.
What did U.S intentions for Cuba have to do with America going for Imperialism?
The Teller Amendment and the Platt Amendment.
What was the Teller Amendment?
It was before we fought Spain. We had no desire to control Cuba after it was freed from Spain.
What was the Platt Amendment?
Cuba is not allowed to have debt, Citizens must be healthy, Cuba has sell land to the U.S for coaling/naval stations, Cuba is not allowed to align/be taken over by a foreign nation.
What were the reasons for America taking over the Philippines?
Resources, Asian Markets, and Civilize them.
What were the reasons America didn’t want to take over the Philippines.
It costs too much, Moral reasons, Violation of all men created equal.
What is the China open door policy?
Secretary of state John Hay proposed a policy by the U.S in 1899, which said that ALL nations would have equal opportunities to trade in China.
