social justice
relates to fairness within society. it is fair and equitable distribution of resources, opportunities and privledges in society
social justice is based on the following principles:
(HEAP)
HUMAN RIGHTS: everyone in society should promote, protect and respect everyones rights and freedoms regardless
PARTICIPATION: everyone in society is encouraged to participate in their community and have their voice represented
ACCESS: everyone in society should have access to equal opportunities and the resources they need to thrive
EQUITY: addresses the factors that cause inequality and provides strategies to ensure fairness- (what individuals or groups require for H+W)
Aboriginal + Torres Strait Islander health inequalities
- higher rates of STIs
- higher mortality rates in each age group
2SPIRT Program
embraces a ‘whole of community approach’ to improve the sexual health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay men, sistergirls and brotherboys (transgender) through education, prevention, health promotion + community development activities
e.g.:
- retreats for gay men, sistergirls and people living with HIV
- printed resources
social justice:
promotes HUMAN RIGHTS to ensure that all people feel accepted and able to fully participate in their community
EQUITY, focusing on disadvantaged groups within A+TSI People community
considerations for evaluating programs for A+TSI People
is the initiative culturally appropriate for A+TSI people? Including consultation, used and training of A+TSI personnel in planning and delivering the program
is the initiative taking the specific needs of the target groups into account?
actual improvements in health outcomes that have been made as a result of the initiative

BUILD HEALTHY PUBLIC POLICY:

CREATE SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENTS: 2spirits per education aims to provide a cultural and safe network for all ages to promote health education, resources and support
STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY ACTIONS: conducts surveys throughout the community to develop rapport and partnerships with health services, collaborating to promote acceptance and inclusion for LGBTQIA+
DEVELOP PERSONAL SKILLS:
develops knowledge and skills about the importance of sexual health workshops and campaigns
REORIENT HEALTH SERVICES: provide professionals with inclusive services to appropriately support A+TSI LGBTQIA+ peoples
