What do think is the role of the NZILA?
- it sets quality standards and guidelines in L.A practice.
- helps to manage and guide the professional ethics and principles of L.A.

What’s the difference between and Landscape Architect & Landscape Designer?
- no legal difference
- Landscape Architect has a broader more technical and collaborative role.
When have your ethics been challenged in a project? How did you respond?
- market square - tree removal.
Have you ever had to declare a conflict of interest?
No I haven’t, but I understand what to look for in such a situation. It could be that your spouse works at a company you’re submitting competition documents to and you’d have to fill out a form declaring your conflict of interest…
What is the Charter and How would you use the NZILA charter in your work?
- The charter is a set of guiding principles:
- Sustainable development
- Treaty of Waitangi
- Maori values
- Stewardship
- Identity
- Human health + wellbeing
- Placemaking
- Inclusivity
- I would refer to the charter for principles and reference information in general practice..
- use as a framework in working alongside others industries.
What is the difference between Code of Ethics and the Charter?
- Code of Ethics outlines the philosophical aspects of being a professional L.A
- the Charter lists out guiding principles and values for those practicing Landscape Architecture in NZ. It talks about the protection, responsive design and management & maintenance of landscape resource in NZ
How do you plan to continue your professional development once you become registered?
- NZILA conferences
- general NZILA events and networking
- In studio workshops re: skill development and teaching
Why is CPD important?
It makes sure the bar is continually raised and new knowledge is fostered.

Land Law:

Have you worked on a project that had community involvement? How important was their input?
- Market Place. AT lead process. Supported public consultation as a designer representative.
- the process provides more detail and outside influence which helps shape a project.
What is the difference between a landscape advocate and an expert witness?
- A landscape advocate is an individual who approaches a land based issue from a subjective view.
- An expert witness provides unbiased opinion. They’re not an advocate for the party the represent.
